Villeroy & Boch
Description:
The Boch family had been producing ceramic ware for three generations when they sent Jean-Francois to train at the prestigious École de Sciences in Paris, where he developed a superior porcelain-like earthenware that could be produced at a lower cost. The innovation made tableware more inclusive as it became affordable across broad classes of society. For this revolutionary creation, the Bochs received the gold medal at the first Prussian trade exhibition held in Berlin in 1922. Over the following decades and generations, the Boch family would continue to innovate at the nexus of aesthetics and the everyday needs of an inclusive consumer class. An artist himself, Eugène Boch was acquainted with prominent artists like James Ensor, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Vincent van Gogh, who painted his portrait which hangs today at the Musée d’Orsay.
Continuing the family’s storied tradition of high-quality ceramics, Villeroy & Boch still designs innovative tableware that blends artistic vision, durability, translucence, and elegance. Crafted from premium porcelain, this modern coffee set features two wave-inspired mugs, rolling saucers, and two spoons with a signature curve at the neck. Part of the New Wave collection, introduced in the early 2000s, the coffee mugs embody the line’s innovative spirit and modern aesthetic that marked a significant departure from traditional tableware designs. The collection’s distinctive feature is its asymmetrical, wave-like shape, which challenged conventional norms and earned the German Business Innovation Award in 2005. Cherished by those who view dining at home more as an experience than a necessity, these mugs contribute to elevating daily rituals like coffee drinking into moments of aesthetic pleasure. Moreover, the mugs symbolize Villeroy & Boch’s ability to innovate while respecting its rich heritage, appealing to consumers who value both tradition and modernity. In a world where the lines between functional objects and art are increasingly blurred, Villeroy & Boch’s New Wave Caffe Mugs stand as a testament to how everyday items can be transformed into objects of design and conversation, making them culturally significant in the realm of contemporary tableware and home decor.
