Abstract:
|
Research
is
fundamental
in
graphic
design.
Designers
today
use
a
variety
of
research
methods
to
understand
the
needs
and
aspirations
of
users
to
strengthen
their
work.
Whether
it
is
conducted
with
a
set
of
self-‐imposed
rules
or
a
time-‐tested
methodology,
research
is
a
process
of
enquiry
that
stimulates
new
ways
of
thinking.
In
contemporary
design,
the
use
of
ethnographic
research
techniques
is
crucial.
Ethnographic
research
techniques
help
designers
collect
and
analyze
data
in
order
to
observe
and
understand
how
people
live
their
lives.
Design
consultancies
such
as
IDEO
and
frog
have
incorporated
ethnographic
research
techniques
into
their
design
processes
and
are
using
them
as
a
means
to
produce
designs
that
serve
and
fulfill
people’s
needs.
In
spite
of
the
instrumental
data
that
ethnographic
research
tactics
provide,
small
design
firms
as
well
as
independent
designers
have
not
embraced
the
advantages
of
these
techniques.
Some
of
the
challenges
that
smaller
design
firms
and
independent
design
contractors
usually
face
are
the
increased
cost
and
time
that
data
collection
presents.
This
thesis
explores
the
use
of
alternative
ethnographic
research
techniques
that
use
remote,
online
communication
to
collect
data
in
a
cost-‐effective
way.
It
also
educates
members
of
the
design
community
on
how
to
elicit
the
appropriate
responses
to
questions
in
data
collection
that
can
later
be
used
to
produce
designs
that
serve
and
fulfill
people’s
needs
and
expectations.
