Abstract:
In this thesis paper I intend to reflect upon the conceptual as well as formal aspects of my
creative practice and how it relates to the work exhibited in my thesis exhibition, “Went for a
Walk.” I will explore in depth, the manner in which my creative practice has progressed
throughout my graduate school experience and the ways in which it has led to the work in my
thesis exhibition. In doing so I hope to clarify my key influences both in terms of theoretical
texts as well as the artists that have helped guide me through the development of my work. I
intend to explain and explore the various themes within my practice, of which the notion of
negation plays a central role. I will address the manner in which I have recognized negation as
an influence, how it has contributed to the way in which I generate ideas, develop my paintings,
and the role it plays in the presentation of my work. I hope to illustrate how these various aspects
of negation are utilized within my practice and how they appear in others. In addition, I plan to
demonstrate the ways in which my exploration of negation is continually expanding, providing
the opportunity for further development of my work far beyond my thesis and academic career.
