Abstract:
The
materials
used
by
contemporary
artists
have
expanded
tremendously
in
the
past
half-‐
century,
but
many
of
these
materials
have
had
uncertain
lifespans,
leading
to
art
that
is
no
longer
fixed
nor
static.
At
the
same
time
modern
scientific
advances
in
chaos
and
complexity
theory
have
made
their
way
into
contemporary
Western
culture,
leading
to
a
greater
understanding
of
the
impermanence
of
our
world.
This
paper
argues
that
for
a
selection
of
contemporary
makers
the
choice
to
use
these
short-‐lived
materials
is
a
conscious
effort
to
gain
a
deeper
comprehension
of
the
nature
of
the
human
experience.
Textiles,
as
materials
that
are
highly
structured
and
highly
susceptible
to
decay,
are
presented
as
an
ideal
metaphor
for
the
complexity
and
transience
of
life.
The
work
in
my
thesis
exhibition
Transient
Structures,
which
combines
rusting
iron
with
fiber,
is
described
as
the
culmination
of
my
own
explorations
of
materiality
and
ephemerality.
