Abstract: 
This thesis is an investigation to discover new ways of approaching residential interior design which has the ability to adapt to the unexpected life-changing events people face, spinal cord injuries in particular. When transitioning from able-bodied to living with a physical disability, there are many design variables that must be taken into consideration such as accessibility, safety, and functionality, in order for a home to operate properly for the needs of the individual. Achieving daily tasks can be a struggle, especially when one’s living environment does not embrace the needs and abilities of the user. A spinal cord injury is such an unpredictable incident, which makes it difficult to prepare for such drastic life-style changes. A traditional residential environment may no longer be suitable for someone who has sustained a spinal cord injury. Physical fitness also becomes a concerning factor for this population, especially when accessible workout equipment are not readily available to these individuals. This thesis is geared towards enhancing the quality of life for the spinal cord injured population in particular individuals to increase user independence and physical fitness. Kinetic design and the interactive theory will be utilized in hopes to enhance the lives of these individuals within the convenience of their home.
