Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the relationships between homesickness among college
freshmen and the qualities of university housing to provide reference for developing university
housing for freshman students to support the transition from adolescence to adulthood. This is
done by focusing on re-creating the domesticity of home in their new living environment.
Research reveals that universities are seeing an increased number of students dropping out of
college and battling homesickness during their first year of college. By identifying the qualities
of home and applying them to student housing, these design elements may help to improve
studentsʼ transition into adulthood by focusing on recreating comfort, personalization, and
community, in return decreasing college dropout rates.
