Abstract:
This thesis investigates the use of voice-over narration in fictional narratives and evaluates how this technique is often utilized when dealing with troubled, often ostracized characters. Close readings of Billy Wilder’s Double Indemnity (1944), Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange (1971), Terrence Malick’s Badlands (1973), Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas (1990), Sam Mendes’ American Beauty (1999), and Todd Field’s Little Children (2006), will serve as case studies in this research.
