Abstract:
Makkah is the destination for Muslims from all over the world; Muslims come to Makkah to perform the pilgrimage once a year. During that time they spend four days in Mina, which contains a permanent tent city created to serve the housing and other needs of the pilgrims. However, the current tent city is inadequate, resulting in capacity, service, and safety issues. The current design of the site is poorly planned, causing much confusion. Since the pilgrims come from different parts of the world, different cultures and different backgrounds, the poor layout of the site adds to the already inherent communication challenges. The commotion caused by so many individuals in such a poorly structured environment has lead to people getting lost, as well as stampedes and fires. Additionally, the camp is permanent and therefore requires maintenance, security and energy throughout the entire year, not just the four days when the site is utilized. Because of those challenges, the tent site in Mina needs a new concept and design.
