Abstract:
"This thesis investigates the effects of the built interior environment in facilitating the creative process as defined by psychologists: preparation, incubation, insight, evaluation, and elaboration. By using the creative process as a framework, a set of tools for creative problem solving can be built and applied to provide the beginnings of a generalist education for high school students as a way to combat low college retention rates in the U.S. The research aims to translate the process from the field of psychology into physical manifestations in the built environment. Information gathered from a literature review, survey, expert interviews, focus group interviews, and site and precedent analyses will inform the impact of the interior environment on the experiential aspects of creativity. Using art and design as the basis for a generalist education that promotes creative problem solving, the design project proposes a hybrid community and arts center that provides art and design education for high-risk high school students as a method of improving future success in college and the workplace. The intent is to create a specialized environment that contains a variety of spaces which experientially engages its users in the five steps of the creative process."
