Abstract:
"As representations of nostalgia, memory and history, films often utilize past images and genres to reconstruct narrative, making the contemporary inseparable from an understanding of the past. By intrinsically recycling/digesting messages about the pursuit of love and introducing human activities from old media such as Hello Dolly!, the musical, WALL-E transcends himself to become more than just a robot. Through establishing a relationship between old media––artifacts WALL-E scavenges and repurposes––and his human traits, the film asks the audience to engage the past not out of longing, but as a foundation for comprehending the present. The act of positive nostalgia and recycling old media that WALL-E engages in posits a resolution of purpose between humanity’s past, present, and future."
