Abstract:
"This thesis is a collection of hopefully humorous yet poignant essays that detail parts of my life from childhood to present day, specifically parts that deal with my initial rejection and eventual acceptance of the color of my skin and everything that comes along with being a millennial African-American female in the Deep South. These stories start with me as a socially awkward child, growing up in my hometown where I was one of the few black kids and span until college, where I was still just as awkward but began to finally define my blackness and what it means to me. These stories are cumulative of my experience in finding my own cultural identity as well as the experience of learning to use humor to write though a very personal and taboo subject." --Abstract
