Abstract:
In developing a community, it is crucial to create a place that is aware of its natural landscape and can support and encourage its inhabitants “to achieve wise use of the land and water resources… giving full consideration to ecological, cultural, historic, and aesthetic values, as well as the needs for a compatible economic development”. The implementation of thoughtful design, advanced building technologies, and the ability to interact with the surrounding environment, without significant impact, should be the minimal standard for development. specifically, the challenge of creating principles toward a prototypical solution for a sustainable, permanent, and
mixed-use living community while trying to manage the ever-increasing population in a sensitive and limited
environment remains unchanged. The inherent need to better understand the coastal environment, as well as how to incorporate better building practices and standards continues. The outcome of this project will produce a new archetype for a sustainable, permanent mixed-use living complex in Charleston, South Carolina. It will provide a precedent for the field of architecture in mixed-use living developments along the coast, resulting in an
improved sense of place - a model of sustainable, urban living for the future of its coastal inhabitants.
