Abstract:
"The domestic arena is my studio. I engage daily with routines and processes to keep my
suburban world afloat. These processes become engrained in my identity and are reflected in the
making of my work. Yarn, knick knacks, leftovers, scraps – all are repurposed through mundane
activities and then displayed. The domestic arena is the canvas. The machinations that substitute for pleasure – laundry,
tidying up, containing, counting, tying up loose ends, fussing, organizing, hanging – are the
processes. In 49 and Counting domesticity is distilled through a contemporary and conceptual
lens where it is organized, compared and contrasted with rigid structures, and documented as
specimens. The historical use of craft materials and salvaged items, as well as the importance of
contemporary conceptual practices and processes that quantify and unify the work, are examined
as direct influences upon my work. Laundry, weaving, canning, writing, organizing, cleaning,
communicating – identity beyond one’s control is created. Echoing the movements of my grandmother and her grandmother before, I enter into the
historical conversation of craft to elevate 'women’s work' to fine art."
