Abstract:
"This thesis will seek the impact of how various design aesthetics in an animated short can have in a viewer experience and how it affects the narrative of an animated short. It will explore different design approaches in the animation continuum from mimesis to abstraction and examine how these possibilities affect the narrative and story development in an animated short and how it influences the viewer experience. We will review how filmmakers and creatives have used these changes in design effectively to enhance the message they want to transmit in their films like filmmaker Bastien Dubois, how it could be done effectively commercially as it was done to promote the Annecy festival in the short from 2016, and finally how it could be use in cartoon animation with the example of Courage the Cowardly Dog’s last episode. As in most animation, most design choices are established throughout its story, therefore experimenting different techniques and design choices could bring a whole new range of possibilities in animation storytelling."
