Abstract:
"Institutional involvement and isolation are correlating human experiences. Participation in systematic societal institutions can evoke feelings of separation and alienation within an individual, even around other participating members. This can lead to one’s understanding of self-worth in relationship to society and those within it. The concept led me to study the notion of worth— financially and theoretically—by means of personal history and the history of Axiology. To further understand the societal influence on personal worth, I also studied General Systems Theory and Social Systems Theory. Combining research and experiential influence, I created and installed bland, clinical spaces like waiting rooms, and developed a system for viewers to follow in order to interact with drawings, sculpture, and other elements within the space. My thesis became a systematic social experiment that guided the viewers toward an isolated experience full of confusion and questions of the institutions that humans participate in regularly."
