Abstract:
"This thesis focuses on increasing the understanding
and education of the African American culture through the
translation of jazz, identifying the style-system with-in it. By
introducing a musical museum, it invokes new ways of how
people or artifacts are represented and creates a destination
that elaborates on the experiences of a people and city that
may be mis-understood. It provides a glimpse into the African
American experience extracted from the emotions of music. Memphis is often characterized by a complexity of
circumstances dealing with financial hardships and crime
which detracts from the overall quality of life for much of the
city. This characterization has contributed to the city’s steady
decline in population with a migration away from the city. A
city steeped in musical history and traditions is slowly becoming
lost in time. This thesis aims to provide a contribution for piecing
together an economically and socially, disconnected city."
