Abstract:
"In the documentary, 'Latinos Beyond Reel,' Juan Gonzalez of the New York Daily News states 'Media shapes reality. We are seeing images not as the world is but as the one who gathered the information, distilled it, and decided what was important for us to understand. Therefore, the process of explaining the world is powerful, if its incomplete, biased, and/or stereotypical it will then become reality for those who receive it.' With this knowledge one can assert that entertainment media directly affects how people view themselves and the world around them, increasing the importance of including diverse character designs in video games that fill current racial and cultural voids. The influence characters have over the success of the video game in which they exist puts a great deal of importance in the appeal of their design. This is the driving force behind character designs being manipulated into stereotypical and non-representational figures, attempting to grab the interest of a specific consumer demographic. By recognizing popular character stereotypes one can evaluate how to conduct subtle shifts in design trends to introduce a more diverse character profile, better representing the individuals that make up American culture. Understanding Juan Gonzalez statement one can content that including diverse character designs in an easy to digest and appealing manner will shift our media experiences and potentially shape the attitudes of America's population towards them.'
