Abstract:
"In modern China, migrant workers have come from rural countryside and helped build infrastructure in mega cities. With a hope of better life, contemporary migrant workers try to adjust themselves both mentally and externally in order to integrate with urban city life. Their identity integration progress is facing numerous challenges and difficulties from different aspects. This thesis studies Chinese migrant workers’ consumption behaviors during the 'in-between' stage of their time in cities as a direct reflection of how they adjust to city life. The designer also examined how other artists and fashion designers deliver messages through expressive visual representation and sensory experience. The final collection used silhouette, color and prints to archive visual representations of transitional identities. Through research and studio practice on material exploration and design details, the goal for this collection is to investigate the utilization of fashion as a tool to project a transformational image of oneself that can reflect the mental and external undergoing of the 'in-between' stage of any form of identity integration."
