Abstract:
"'Where the Light Enters' is a collaborative photographic project between fellow MFA Photography candidate Cecilia Montalvo and myself. We will consider the physical, metaphorical, and emotional qualities of the ever-changing landscape of the barrier islands in south Florida; photographing in the 19th century wet-plate collodion process and producing prints via the 21st century archival pigment method. The written component of our collaborative effort will involve an individual, and separate, analysis of the technical, historical, and collaborative components of our process. Additionally, we will consider the influence of Gilles Deleuze’s Affect Theory by using photography to communicate, visually, our interpretation of the environment by studying our subjects through the symbolic lens of Magical Realism. For us, life has a patina that is earned not bestowed; it can be witnessed but not processed, experienced, but not controlled. This patina, seen through sensitive middle-aged eyes can present as primitive and paradoxical, simultaneously permanent and impermanent; steadfast in its mutability. This is our purpose, to reflect upon the overlap of origin and destination, traveling in tandem with our identity and our intention. Always at the intersection of some prelapsarian crossroad, illuminated by fate and guided by the place where the light enters."
