Abstract:
"This thesis will observe existing examples of character-driven feature films, and analyze the
methods of characterization and subsequent plot development that led to the success of their
narratives. Certain genres offer better opportunities for more thorough characterization, namely romantic dramas and dark comedies. This paper will investigate the development of a male-female romantic leading duo as presented in several films under the umbrella of Drama - 'Seeking a Friend for the End of the World', The Notebook', 'Just Like Heaven', 'If I Stay', '500 Days of Summer', and 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind'. Each study will include additional elements of the films that relate it to 'Upheaval'’s story, like visual and practical effects, surrealist visuals, and time jumps, to name a few. The achievements of these existing films heavily influenced the creation of 'Upheaval', and the execution of bringing our scripted characters to life will be detailed in the process portion following the analyses."
