Abstract:
"Since the early 1960s, social impact designers have attempted the creation of various projects that benefit humanitarian, social, and/or environmental causes. Social impact design can open doors to empower underserved communities. Social impact design can facilitate empowerment and self-advocacy in underserved communities and the value and effectiveness of social impact design has been demonstrated in various areas. This project uses social impact design to address unemployment for formerly incarcerated people, 27% of whom were unemployed in 2018. In addition to a lack of financial/emotional support, felons are often perceived by many in society as dangerous, uneducated, and untrustworthy. This thesis will further explore the barriers to re-entry that hinder the successes of formerly incarcerated, low-level felons, and attempt to develop solutions to overcoming these barriers. An investigation of social impact design case studies to understand how designers in the field solve these types of complex issues will be conducted as well."
