Abstract:
"Traditional street markets in India have always been the center of public and social life of Indian cities. These traditional street markets, popularly called as Bazaars, are no less than the mirror of a city and its culture. Over the centuries, these Bazaars or street markets have catered several formal and informal activities of a permanent or transient nature.
As much as the permanent traders and shops contribute in the success of these markets, the transient activities such as informal street vending, festivals or events celebrations etc.; equally contribute in the character of the place as well as catalyze the significant cultural and economical exchanges that take place in these markets. However, recent trends of redevelopment and revitalization proposals for these traditional markets; have been seen to eliminate Informal activities from street markets. Ignorance of these informal activities and transient component of Bazaars, results in placelessness, exclusion of poor vendors from the public space and collapse of the informal economy. This thesis proposes an alternative approach to redevelop and revitalize the Rajwada district and Sarafa Bazaar (market) of Indore, a historic and traditional market city in central India; by rediscovering traditional Indian and vernacular typology of Traditional street markets of India i.e. bazaars." --Abstract
*Keywords: traditional Indian street markets, Indore, Rajwada, Sarafa Bazaar, street vendors, inclusion, avoiding placelessness, placemaking
