Abstract:
"Nostalgia, historically once considered a bad omen of homesickness, is a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations. Psychologically, nostalgia is a homeostatic emotion that arises when people feel left out of the current way of things. It is incited by psychological threat and serves to restore one's well-being. Nostalgia is tied to our personal objects, our meaningful experiences, and our most cherished memories. It is a mood management strategy that allows us to become optimistic and inspired about the future, rather than dwelling on the negative in the present. Through promoting our physical well-being, encouraging close relationships, and providing a guide for the 'good life' (family, close friends, community, rituals, traditions, social and cultural fabric preservation), bringing on the sense of nostalgia through our memories and mementos has the capacity to counteract distress and restore psychological equanimity. Everyone nostalgizes and it remains important that we do. At the center of nostalgia are the memories and mementos that are most important, and nostalgia remains prevailing and frequent for as long as our memories remain significant and timeless. This thesis aims to develop a tool that focuses on preserving memories, in turn making them enduring and everlasting, for the purpose of creating and prompting valuable nostalgia." --Abstract
