Abstract:
"In China, many historic buildings are abandoned because of urbanization policies and China's rapid economic development. The development of urbanization reflects the change of population structure, and it also has a negative impact on more marginalized elements of tradition such as that of the Hakka. It is surprising that while twenty million people are from the Hakka culture, they know very little about their culture and where they come from. The purpose of the Crane Lake Hakka Cultural Center is not only to immerse visitors in the daily life and culture of Hakkas and educate them so they can understand the story of a minority culture but also because it is important for those Chinese who have settled elsewhere in the world to understand real Chinese life. Using the 200-year-old Lowe family historic buildings as a building site, the project is a platform that promotes not only the Hakka culture and historic architecture adaptive reuse but also helps those Chinese who are living overseas to learn more about their culture. This Crane Lake Hakka Cultural Center will include a walkthrough journey where visitors can learn more about the history and lives of the Hakka people, activity rooms where visitors can explore cultures through a walkthrough journey and other activities to explore cultures, and an interactive market area where visitors can interact with the cast members of the museum and experience the daily life of the Hakka in the themed environment." --Abstract
