"An endeavor to contextualize the work of painter Olivia Tiberio within a very old, but still enigmatic and ambiguous category of figurative painting, by description of various art historical examples that meet its criteria– paintings of ordinary people, selected at the whims of the artist, which remain compelling whether or not the subject's identity is known. These paintings are often described as wordlessly 'truthful,' without much further explanation as to why that is. The writer believes this particular kind of perceptible, visual truth is rooted in the artist's own fascination with and empathy for the subject portrayed, which is translated by some alchemical process to the viewer." --Abstract
