Abstract:
"Within the current media climate, urban culture aesthetics are misrepresented and vilified through the art of storytelling. Whether through visual or print mediums, vast misunderstandings and division is propagated between individuals who participate in urban culture and those who see these participants as troublemakers and delinquents. This thesis will address common misrepresentations of urban culture created by entertainment media and news reporting. After discussing the negativity surrounding urban culture, positive examples will be analyzed from case studies of film, television, and contemporary street artists breaking down their involvement in the culture to promote positive changes in their environment. Lastly, the thesis will showcase how urban aesthetics and culture can be used to create a unique world informed by street art, extreme sports, and urban design to create a positive representation of urban culture through a series of concept art images to be used as pre-production for an animated series." --Abstract
