Abstract:
"Detective Video Games promise to make players feel like detectives, yet they tend to be a linear experience that forces the player to solve the mystery in a specific way. Even when these games provide choices for the players, they are more focused on the narrative than the gameplay. This can hinder the player's experience as they are not allowed to use their own deductive skills to solve the mystery their way and restrict their agency. The aim of this thesis is to prove that in detective video games, providing non-linear approaches in the way players can apply the tools of an investigator (Information, Interrogation, and Instrumentation) can improve the player's agency. Following this design methodology would allow for players to apply their own deduction skills to solve the game's mystery and result in a more satisfying investigative experience." --Abstract
