Abstract:
"This thesis proposes an application of Jung's theory of the collective unconsciousness and archetype in analysis of motion graphic works. Utilizing Jung's mandala archetype, the thesis examines the connection between mythological iconography and motion graphics artworks. The thesis includes four chapters. The first chapter gives an overview of Jung's theory of collective unconsciousness and archetype and its influence on motion graphic artists. The second chapter discusses the application of the Jungian mandala archetype in motion graphics through close readings of Yantra, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (2016) Opening Title, and Babylon Berlin (2018) Opening Title. The third chapter presents the process of my visual project, which applies the mandala archetype to the trailer of Burning Man. Finally, the fourth chapter examines Jungian art theory's contribution and limitation in motion graphics analysis." --Abstract
