Abstract:
"'Traces' is my photographic interpretation of the rural condition from a fragmented point of view. It is not solely an exploration of this specific kind of man altered landscape, rather it is an indexical view of changes over time. Pictured in the southeast, I document this specific landscape and the details within it in order to try and understand this ever changing and understated condition in the American landscape. Additionally, this work questions the role various forms of visual language play in influencing one’s understanding of a place and its people. I engage in a dialogue, using photography, with things such as signage and local vernacular because of their concreteness; they were created and given a voice by man, yet they cannot speak beyond their appearance. In this way, I feel that these fixtures in the landscape convey a certain level of cultural relevance, and reflect an individualism of both the residents and the towns alike. The photographs that comprise 'Traces' represent a connection I felt with the landscape at that moment, and express an affinity for these places in their subtle, unique details."
