Abstract:
The photographic body of work I’m Ty Not Tyler is comprised of both
traditional portraits and photographic fragments. These fragments provide
glimpses into the lives and environments of five family members—my son Ty, my
wife Tammy, Tammy’s mother, and my parents—and expand the function of the
portrait. With this, I address aspects of my family including individual identity,
one’s place in a larger social group, adoption, the place of an adopted child in a
family, and the assembly of many to form a more complete whole. Although I
have not photographed myself, ultimately the entire project is an extended self-portrait.
