Abstract:
"The photographs that make up the body of work, Transfiguration, explore
how clothing, hairstyle, and makeup can transform us. They provide a deeper
look into the subculture of central Florida drag queens as they ignore taboo in a
conservative town and transform themselves into the opposite sex to perform for
an audience. This work explores the motivations and methods of these
individuals. Presented in black-and-white, these photographs echo the works of
those artists from whom I gleaned major inspiration, Diane Arbus, Robert Frank,
and Arthur Tress. What is drag? Who does drag and why? What makes us who we are, and
what really dictates gender identity?"
