Abstract:
"Functioning as a vital role in conveying the wonder of history across fields, times, and races, museums, are exceptionally valuable for their educational and aesthetic purposes, according to Chen (2014). However, what museums traditionally represent strongly contradicts how adolescents currently view them. They are now stereotyped as 'boring' and 'grey' sites that appeal to few in China. Since a majority of museums in China are of great significance to disseminating the enduring and glowing Chinese culture (Zhang, 2019), efforts are required to increase the number of the young visiting museums. This thesis focuses on the problem regarding the fading attraction of Chinese museums among adolescents, taking the perspective from interior design and aiming to awaken youths' interest in visiting the cultural icons and historical traces. Multi-method research were conducted to evaluate the current situation of Chinese museums, the preferences and characteristics of teens, and trends in museum studies. By using Shanghai Museum as an instance, and combining applicable theories, the design solution of a lifestyle museum is proposed in an attempt to alleviate the current predicaments museums are confronted with as well as promoting adolescents' visiting experience. A design prototype of a completely new lifestyle museum tour with key updates providing adolescents with immersive and interactive experiences a is finally proposed." --Abstract
