Abstract:
"The focus of this paper is to analyze the depictions of traumatized protagonists of the indie films You Were Never Really There, Sound of Metal, and Honey Boy, on the premise that these portrayals are more authentic than the iconic Hollywood depiction of the 2019 film Joker and Casualties of War. This work addresses the Character Study as a vital paradigm of Cinema. It then argues the concept of 'brokenness' in relation to Character. Additionally, it provides a brief overview of fundamental historical and conceptual aspects that build the rhetoric of trauma. This paper finally proposes an approach to the main concepts of Gestalt Therapy, as a model for character development in Screenwriting and Directing." -- Abstract
