Abstract:
"This thesis seeks to illuminate the critical position of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 (1986) as continuing or responding to analysis of the 1974 original film’s stance on capitalism, Americana, and cultural normalcy. The research focuses on the sequel’s generic elements, particularly Western and horror, and their context to lead actor Dennis Hopper, and how that context sheds light on the cinematic culture at the time of release within a dominantly Reaganite mode. This study posits TCM 2 as an oppositional force toward Reganite Hollywood, utilizing the popular aesthetics and film culture of the eighties to mock the dramatic shift towards reactionary narratives." --Abstract
