Abstract:
"This article will take Scott Pilgrim by Bryan Lee O'Malley and Dennis Culver and Nikola Cizmesija's Future State: Gotham and compare them to manga that use screen tones in similar ways, My Monster Secret by Eiji Masuda and Ghost in the Shell by Shirow Masamune. In doing so, I will demonstrate the influences that manga is having on the visual styles of American comics and will discuss the techniques used to create them. Through my research, I hope to learn why the use of screen tones has become commonplace amongst manga artists, and discern possibilities as to why many American comics artists have chosen not to include them in their repertoire of techniques; to learn how technique might travel from one place to another in our global society; how American comics might be innovating the techniques used within this medium through the use of technology; and to teach and discuss comics production as a craft." --Abstract
