Abstract:
“In the recent fifteen years, cancer risk in young adults has gradually increased; however, the treatment environment of palliative care for young patients has not gotten a concern. Current healthcare facilities are not well-adapted for multiple life stages (Peditto K. S., 2019). Pediatric palliative care departments and hospice shelters are hard to meet requirements perfectly for young adults with cancer. Furthermore, interior design in healthcare lacks target design to improve the life quality of young adults with cancer. This thesis discusses the livability problems of young adults (18-39 years old) in a palliative care center. The thesis used qualitative research methods, including interviews, surveys, and case studies, to identify the needs and preferences of young adults with cancer. The findings reflect that the interior design of palliative care centers needs to focus not only on physical needs but also on the prevalent psychological problems of patients: anxiety, depression, and social issues. In addition, the findings discovered that a centralized layout is widely used in healthcare buildings to increase socialization opportunities for patients. The significance of the study is to accommodate the needs of young adults receiving palliative care for cancer in healthcare treatment environments. Finally, the design implications create a refuge for young cancer patients, and design applications motivate patients to live an active life and relieve psychological stress.” –Abstract
