Abstract:
"This thesis will use research from previous film-adaptations of stage productions, as well as specific theatrical precedent studies of Terrence McNally's Ragtime, in order to create a cinematic scenic design package for the musical. Utilizing precedent studies will allow for thorough design development of the musical, and acknowledgment of both successful and failed examples of past productions will reveal what elements of set design are affected when designing for film—as opposed to live entertainment. In conjunction with this research, the design process itself will reveal the differences in script analysis, importance of detail, and an approach to literalness that make designing for a film-adapted musical unique. The integrity of the story, the theatrical community, and previous design teams all come into play when such a massive storytelling perspectival shift occurs." --Abstract
