Abstract:
"This thesis will explore the evolving relationship between data and people. With a growing reliance and prevalence of data to influence decisions across all industries, there is a need to explore the human ramifications of our new data-driven society. Harms caused by data bias are at the forefront of today's data-related discourse, and there is a growing awareness that despite data's scientific, seemingly-objective nature there is a non-neutral context that is often unaccounted for. This thesis explores the dimensions of power that have allowed data to take hold of today's systems and the value that lies in our human stories as a means of subverting data's outdated perceptions of neutrality." --Abstract
