Abstract:
“Gingham, the unassuming checkered cloth, has maintained a ubiquitous presence in mainstream American culture since the beginning of the twentieth century. In spite of its continued popularity amongst Western consumers, little is known about the fabric’s complex history. Historically, gingham was a part of the identity and, by extension, traditions of various minority populations across cultures, continents, and centuries. Born out of Southeast Asian weaving communities, the checkered cloth was introduced into American society by way of colonization and the slave trade. Although these communities shaped the trajectory of Western culture, their contributions have been largely obscured by historic narratives. Gingham’s chronology functions as a lens through which the influence, practices, and erasure of history’s hidden figures can be examined and understood. As we seek to rectify their exclusion from our collective consciousness, children’s books emerge as a viable medium through which
underrepresented stories can be contextualized and disseminated, thus providing young readers with a broader, more diverse understanding of the past.” --Abstract
