Abstract:
"This thesis examines the representation of the Appalachian region within the visual arts of Cinema and Television throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. The perception of Appalachia in media has been a consistently negative one. These portrayals come partially through naivety and a lack of native Appalachian residents having control over their narrative within the entertainment world. Being saddled as 'Other' to the outside world has proven overly detrimental and exhausting for most within the region. It is imperative to examine where these depiction's come from and how to reshape them with the changing demographics of Appalachia through underrepresented groups and realities. Some of the films analyzed include Hillbilly Elegy, October Sky, Wrong Turn, and Tucker and Dale vs. Evil." --Abstract Keywords: Appalachia, representation, hillbilly, cannibal, horror
