Abstract:
“’Under the Guise of Craft’ is a thesis body of work that explores the influence of abstraction, materiality, formlessness, and the hierarchy between art and craft. The artwork produced for the accompanying eponymous exhibition analyzes and pokes at the contentious relationship between art and craft in Modern and Postmodern Art, revels in the manipulation of a wide variety of materials and processes and capitalizes on the gendered cultural associations attributed to craft. Craft then becomes a strategy to embed symbolism in Art that appears to aspire solely to surface quality and decoration, when taken at first value. The author narrates her journey from the legal field and her Latin American upbringing to her transformation as a contemporary artist in the United States and connects her experience to the production of her current work.” –Abstract
