Abstract:
“This thesis is a collection of works—part memoir, part journalism—exploring Southern identity through my experience growing up as a young woman in Mississippi and the experiences of my family members. Told in three parts: the boys, the girls, and me, I illuminate the stereotypes of Southern individuals and highlight the parts of my family and myself that oppose or challenge those stereotypes. Combining memoir, journalism, photographs and primary documents, ‘Tupelo Tornadoes’ is a journey from prejudice to empathy, from confusion to compassion, from unearthing to regrowing. Topics discussed include autism, diabetes, southern womanhood and complicity.” –Abstract
