Abstract:
"Today, music video directors are not calling themselves Surrealists but are using surrealist strategies in music videos to create vivid dream-like imagery. Music videos are the result of word-image association using the lyrics which has also been used to create surrealist works in the past. Contemporary video director David Wilson employs the surrealist word-image association in music videos using the body as the canvas to explore emotions from the lyrics. The paper discusses Wilson's music videos while analyzing surrealist works and how both use the technique allowing the unveiling of complex emotions, resulting in psychological, emotional, and physical violence on the body in the music videos, giving the viewers shocking imagery." --Abstract
