Abstract:
“This thesis explores the use of systems thinking to improve the online reporting platform for anti-Asian hate crimes. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in discrimination against Asians, with many people being unfairly blamed for the spread of the virus. However, many Asian individuals do not report incidents of hate crime due to various reasons such as fear, lack of knowledge, and distrust in the system. This research aims to understand these reasons behind this reluctance and to create a more supportive reporting service using the service design approach. Through collaboration with stakeholders, the author has synthesized the ecosystem map and identified areas of innovation in the pre-, during-, and post-reporting stages of a hate crime reporting service in order to increase reporting rates for anti-Asian hate crimes in New York City.” –Abstract
