Abstract:
“In this exploration of architecture’s intersection with gender and fashion, this thesis unveils the intricate connections between the past and present dynamics of these intertwined relationships. Architecture, as a discipline entrenched in a history of patriarchal dominance, perpetuates societal tendencies of division adhering to binary conditions while obstructing inclusivity and diversity. From the differentiation of program into public and private spheres to the gendered categorization of physical space, architecture becomes entangled in binary constructs reinforcing order and permanence as the foundation of a thriving society. However, how can a society flourish when its fundamental building blocks disregard those who do not conform to the rigid, societal expectations? By critically examining the personal relationship between architecture, gender, and fashion, this thesis sheds light on the urgent need for architectural practices to challenge binary thinking by embracing fluidity and celebrating individuality. The culmination of research embodied in this thesis stems from an ardent pursuit of comprehending the essence of a fluid architecture and drawing inspiration from the remarkable representation of fluidity achieved by fashion. While both gender and fluidity defy simple definitions, fashion, too, eludes confinement within a single phrase. Fashion is profoundly subjective, ephemeral, and enigmatic. It dares to challenge the boundaries of the ‘known,’ enabling the expression of personal identity while unveiling authenticity. Fashion blurs the line between art and function, presenting a practice that is both innovative and functional. This exploration of gender and fashion in relation to architecture confronts the traditions of the discipline, inviting a new narrative that redefines the potential of architecture itself. In this quest to redefine architecture’s boundaries, it is through the convergence of gender, fashion, and architecture that sets forth a vision for architecture to become a beacon of liberation, creativity, and boundless possibilities.” –Abstract
