Abstract:
“According to history, it is evident that the current nature of architecture has and will continue to rely on de-construction and re-construction of materials to create new buildings. While some Architecture continues to serve its purpose, that is to provide basic human needs, others have already served their purpose and are left to carry their own weight. This is usually outweighed by termination and builds are cast away to be demolished for something new that is more often perceived with more importance while neglecting that which at one point in time is considered a part of a thriving community. I am proposing we introduce an alternative path in this larger cycle we put our buildings through, that is adaptive reuse. with this in mind, I hope to use this more recent method of practice to re-imagine affordable housing by defining its typology as a ‘set up’ for revitalizing the urban density issue. While repurposing for housing is the goal, research will show that they are less likely to succeed. Mixed-use projects are the way to approach reuse projects that allow for both residential and business to play a role in binding the community together.” –Abstract
