Abstract:
“This thesis will examine the significance of the Renaissance Movement by my creation of similar portrait styles of the Renaissance period to challenge society's idolatry of stars. In this body of work, you will find my love for art history, pattern, texture, color, deep shadows, my friends, family, pets, and the world around me. My effort to create these portraits is an attempt to harmoniously integrate history and modernity by embracing art history with contemporary photographic and printing techniques. It is a nod and reference to the great painters of light, oils, and shadow. Working with a combination of studio and window lighting (commonly used in the Renaissance Period), I capture my loved ones and myself, in a variety of portrait styles that one would typically see in the Renaissance period. This series is inspired by the history of the High and Low Renaissance, Flemish still life paintings, and the work of contemporary portraiture, in hopes that the viewer perceives their life as the greatest event in history.” –Abstract
