Abstract:
“There is much to explore at the intersection of art and postpartum depression (PPD), which has long been misunderstood and stigmatized, particularly for marginalized women. Historical medical literature has attributed PPD to everything from the uterus to hysteria to being self-inflicted. While medical treatments have varied widely, one thing remains consistent: women suffering from PPD must often limit their actions and behaviors to fit within the suffocating constraints of the societal standards placed upon them. However, art offers a new way of understanding and dealing with PPD. By conveying emotions and experiences, artwork helps individuals suffering from PPD feel seen and heard. This examination of how art assists in treating PPD and the role that art plays in reducing the stigmas associated with the condition aims to demonstrate the power of art in providing an outlet for expression and a means of healing for those affected by PPD. The visual component is an application of this examination, utilizing illustration to create a visual memoir of personal experiences with PPD., allowing for self-expression with the aspirations of reaching mothers in need.” –Abstract
