Abstract:
“Weird/dreamcore is an aesthetic with the motifs commonly associated with daydreams or nightmares visioning unrealistic subjects from the old days. This aesthetic is a popularized form of digital surrealist art. Elements such as windows, doors and other objects that symbolize the liminal space are prone to evoke certain emotions in the audience, such as nostalgia and uncanny and have a wide resonance with them, especially from late millennials to Generation Z. Weird/dreamcore aesthetics has its psychological and philosophical foundations. The strangeness unveiled by weird/dreamcore artworks is the feeling of thrownness that people have when facing their own existence in the physical world not knowing its own purpose. Through visual analysis of games commented as related to weird/dreamcore, I summarize the core features of this aesthetics that can be applied to mainstream 3D games.” –Abstract
