Abstract:
|
“Throughout history, women's experiences and contributions to humanity have been systematically minimized. Until very recently, conventional beliefs have held that motherhood precludes women's ability to meaningfully contribute to societal discourse as a creative or intellectual. Alison Miller Willards M.F.A. thesis, Unicorns are Real, defends the idea that the myriad of profound contributions of women intellectuals and artists are not wrought in spite of motherhood, but because of it. Her matriarchal journey is borne of the duality of domestic and creative pursuits, and this work seeks to explore it through the lens of the Romantic-era concept of the sublime. Motherhood is the death of one identity and a resurrection of new life filled with heightened emotions, and connectivity beyond male hetero cisgender conceptualization. Unicorns are Real exposes societal pitfalls, gamut of emotions, and unseen labors that come packaged within the sacred title of mother. Her work conveys this through a variety of media including paint, fabric, found, objects, and photography. Ruth Asawa, Carrie Mae Weems, and
Louis Bourgeois are considered as artists whose work and lives support this conversation.” –Abstract
